The University of Jordan Achieves Significant Progress in QS Global Subject Rankings

The University of Jordan (UJ) has achieved prestigious global results in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, which is considered the most influential and important in the field of subject rankings worldwide. Released annually by the British institution 'QS', the university has obtained advanced positions in all five scientific fields classified, and in eighteen specific disciplines.

Within this global ranking, UJ has made remarkable progress in several disciplines, including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, computer science, information systems, engineering, mathematics, business, languages, tourism, library and information science.

On the level of scientific fields, UJ ranked 347 globally in Arts and Humanities, advancing from the 451-500 ranking it held in 2023. In Social Sciences and Management, it ranked 227, an improvement from the 270th position in 2023. In Engineering and Technology, it ranked 253, up from 260 in 2023. In Life Sciences and Medicine, it ranked 401-450, an advancement from 451-500 in 2023, and in Natural Sciences, it ranked 501-550, a category where it was not globally classified in the 2023 ranking.

In terms of specific disciplines, UJ was ranked in one discipline among the top 50 universities globally, in three disciplines among the top 100, in five disciplines among the top 200, in fourteen disciplines among the top 300, in fifteen disciplines among the top 400, in sixteen disciplines among the top 500, and eighteen disciplines among the top 600 universities globally. Additionally, seven disciplines improved their positions in this year's ranking, while seven maintained their global position, and three new disciplines entered the global ranking.

At the Arab level, UJ ranked first in the Arab world in nursing, English language, and linguistics, second in tourism, fourth in medicine, pharmacy, library and information science, and fifth in computer science, information systems, mathematics, business, and management.

In Arts and Humanities, UJ was globally ranked in English language and linguistics at 251-300, being the only Jordanian university ranked globally in these disciplines. In Social Sciences and Management, it was globally ranked in six disciplines, with four being the only Jordanian university ranked globally and two being the top locally ranked. In Library and Information Science, UJ ranked 49 globally, an improvement from the 51-70 position it held in the 2023 ranking. In Tourism, it ranked 51-100 globally, entering the ranking for the first time in its history. In Accounting and Finance, Business and Management, and Education, it maintained its global ranking at 251-300. In Economics, UJ entered the ranking for the first time, ranking 551-560 globally.

In Engineering and Technology, UJ was globally ranked in four disciplines, with three being the top-ranked university locally and one being the second locally ranked. In Computer Science and Information Systems, UJ's ranking was 149 globally, advancing from the 151-200 position it held in the 2023 ranking. In Civil Engineering, where UJ entered the ranking for the first time, it ranked 201-240. In Electrical and Electronic Engineering, it ranked 251-300, an improvement from 301-350 in 2023. In Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, it ranked 301-350, advancing from 401-450 in 2023.

In Life Sciences and Medicine, UJ was globally ranked in four disciplines, with one being the only locally-ranked university and in three being the top locally-ranked university. UJ ranked 51-100 in Nursing, advancing from 101-150 in 2023, maintained its position at 101-150 in Pharmacy and Pharmacology, and advanced to 251-300 in Medicine from 351-400 in 2023. In Biological Sciences, it ranked 501-550, advancing from 601-650 in 2023.

In Natural Sciences, UJ was globally ranked in two disciplines, in one being the only locally ranked university and in one being the top locally ranked university. It maintained its position at 201-250 in Mathematics and ranked 451-500 in Chemistry.

It is worth noting that this ranking is based on five criteria: the academic reputation of the subject measured by the reputation of scientific research in the subject to be ranked and the reputation of the teaching and research staff, the employment reputation of graduates of the subject, the citation rate per internationally published research in the subject, global research collaboration within the subject, and finally the H-index for research published in this subject.
