Former Minister of Culture and Professor of Arabic Language and Literature at the University of Jordan, Prof. Salah Jarrar earned his BA in Arabic Language and Literature from the University of Jordan in 1974, and the MA and PhD in Andalusian Literature in 1978 and 1982, respectively, from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Professor Jarrar joined the University of Jordan in 1982 where he was promoted through the academic ranks. He held numerous key positions including Minister of Culture (2011-2012), Acting President of The World Islamic Sciences and Education University (2013-2014), Vice President of the University of Jordan (2007-2010), Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture (1999-2002), Head of the National Committee for the Preservation of the Arabic Written Heritage (2006-2011), and Dean of Academic Research and Graduate Studies at Al- albayt University (2006-2007). Professor Jarrar is a highly accomplished scholar with around one hundred books and studies on Andalusian Literature, Arabic Manuscripts, cultural Studies, Multiculturalism, cultural dialogue, autobiographies and memoirs, cultural criticism and comparative literature. He supervised tens of MA and PhD theses and dissertations. He is also the recipient of the Independence Badge of Honor (2002), and the State Appreciation Award in Literature (2009).
