Prof. Mohammad Adnan Bakheet
 
President of the Jordanian National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) Board of Trustees, and an honorary professor at UJ, Mohammad Adnan Bakheet received a bachelor degree in History, 1963, a diploma in Education, 1963, and a master's degree in Islamic History, 1965, all from the American University in Beirut.  He earned his doctoral degree in Islamic History in 1972 from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
 
Prof. Bakheet is the founder and the present Director of the Center for Documents and Manuscripts at UJ which was established in 1972, and the founder and Director of the History of Bilad Al-Sham Committee which has issued more than 30 volumes since first established in 1972.  He is the Head of the UNESCO Committee responsible for preparing the 4th volume of the History of Humanity from the 7th century to the end of the 14th century, and member of the World Affairs Council and Editor in Chief of Al-Nadwa Journal.  
 
He held several key positions at UJ including Dean of Scientific Research 1984-1989, Editor in Chief of the Dirasat Journal, 1984-1989, Acting Director of the Center for Strategic Studies, 1985-1989, Vice President for Planning and Community Service, 1989-1990, Vice President for Humanities, 1990-1991.
 
He was also President of Mutah University, 1991-1993, founder and President of Al al-Bayt University, 1993-2001, Head of the Academic Committee of the Board of Higher Education in Jordan, 1998-2001, member of the Jordan Academy of Arabic, and member of the former Royal Academy of Jordan for Islamic Civilization Research (The Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought). Prof. Bakheet is a well published researcher with nearly 70 publications and has supervised over 16 master’s and doctoral theses and dissertations.
 
He also served on several committees and boards including member of the Board of Trustees of Hamad Al-Jasir Charitable Foundation, 2004, member of the Research Assessment Committee for the King Faisal International Prize since 2001, member of the Advisory Council of the World Congress for Middle East Studies (WOCMES), Mainz University, 2006, member of the Advisory Council of the International Congress of Asian and North African Studies (ICANAS), 2007, and member of the Board of Trustees of The Royal Jordanian Hashemite Documentation Center, 2008.
Prof. Bakheet received numerous awards and recognitions including the Arab Historian Order, 1987, the Jordanian Order of Independence of the First Class, 1990, the Palestinian “Jerusalem Medal for Culture, Arts and Literature,” 1991, the Jordanian Ministry of Culture Recognition Award in Social Sciences, the French Legion of Honour; Cavalier Degree, 2009, The University of Jordan Distinguished Researcher Award, 2007, Al-Hussein Medal for Excellence of the First Order, 2008,  and King Faisal International Prize in Islamic Studies, 2011.
